The Extraordinary Impact of SIOR on My Career
Recently, a colleague asked what business decision had the single greatest influence on my career. It didn’t take me long to provide them with the answer.
The extraordinary impact the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) has brought to my career and related benefits are too numerous to count. I have been fortunate to meet and spend time with many of our industry’s best and brightest minds across the world.
Reflecting on the last 20 years holding the designation, SIOR in my experience represents some of today’s most knowledgeable and successful real estate specialists. Growth is a by-product of being around this forward-thinking group, but the organization is so much more.
As a younger broker it offered real-life examples of what excellence looks like. I had a front row seat to witness leaders who are outrageous in their thinking, relentless in execution, but all done with style and character. While difficult to put into words, they embody client first thinking. Integrity. Expertise. Collaboration. Innovation. Mentorship… and so much more.
SIOR also provided early leadership opportunities that taught me about group dynamics, prioritization, and teamwork. How vision and passion, when put together the right way can create powerful outcomes for an organization and the people it serves.
Along the way, I realized that without intention, I was developing a network across the industry. SIOR has an incredible representation of brokers from big and small firms. Both major and tertiary markets. This is a collective group eager to share ideas and best practices. An atmosphere and culture of abundance thinking. I have yet to see anything remotely close to it.
SIOR is also constantly evolving. It was ahead of the curve during its formation in the early 40’s. In recent decades, it has repeatedly sought ways to reimagine its place in the industry. Today, it is still at the forefront of modern day industrial and office trends while driving unique avenues for networking across all facets of this profession.
Not surprisingly, its worldwide connectivity and resources lead to deal making. The largest transactions I closed as a broker were often completed with another SIOR member. I have seen firsthand the significant level of business that takes place on a global level.
If the preceding isn’t enough, while something I never initially contemplated when first joining, I am proud to say that some of my closest friends today are a part of SIOR.
SIOR has enriched my life, and I would recommend it to anyone who values the importance of excellence, high standards and a transformative, continually improving approach to their career.
If you are a new member or considering pursuing the designation, please reach out if I can ever be of assistance. I endeavor to return the kindness and unending support provided to me by so many.
