Learning from that word “No” in Business
Like anyone in business today that is aspiring to grow, I have experienced my share of rejection. In the world of commercial real estate, that has ranged from countless failed phone calls, lost deals, to clients who left mistakenly thinking they might be better served elsewhere. What we often forget is that same rejection is an unfortunate, but also necessary aspect of our human experience.
Learning to deal with obstacles is part of life. Those interactions that led to a “no” can also carry a powerful and transformative effect on our careers if we are paying close attention. Here are a few of my personal observations and some of the benefits to consider the next time you find yourself in that uncomfortable place.
The scenic route can lead to new discoveries.
Disappointments can teach us valuable lessons and also lead us down a different path. Taking the longer way may not necessarily be preferred at first. It does however have the unique ability to open new doors that we never would have anticipated otherwise. Keep your eyes open along the way for that next big opportunity.
“No” is not the end.
Don’t see a “no” as a brick wall, but a temporary roadblock. Find an alternate solution. Grit is one of the largest determining factors for success. It is about having the energy, creative thinking, and desire to see a long-term goal through. This belief in our talents combined with an internal drive to succeed is what overcomes those challenges.
Excelling in this industry isn’t easy. Gaining market share takes planning, relentless effort, and that critical element of timing. When representing a client’s best interests, you can’t cut corners. Patience with the right work ethic will win out time and time again. Keep pushing forward.
