The Best Career Advice I Ever Received
Early on in my career, I was fortunate to have several mentors who generously guided my path into commercial real estate. While there is no shortage of skills required to achieve success in this business, one recommendation given to me has always stood out more than any other – building a trusted network.
The lasting impact on my career from developing a close group of professionals outside of my own company has been nothing less than extraordinary. Interestingly, many of those longstanding relationships have come from top organizations like SIOR, CCIM, IREM and RICS.
To quote Rich Dad Poor Dad Author, Robert Kiyosaki, “The richest people in the world look for and build networks. Everyone else looks for work.” I subscribe to both and have witnessed firsthand the significant level of education, information sharing and deal making that takes place within each. Here’s how:
Bigger Thinking – These high-level organizations represent today’s most knowledgeable, experienced, and successful commercial real estate specialists. Furthermore, integrity and excellence lead the mindset of their members. Bigger thinking and growth are a natural by-product of being around these individuals.
Cutting Edge – It’s impossible to ignore the influences of technology and the corresponding rapid rate of change occurring. The best way to maintain relevance in the backdrop of these changes is to keep pace with the emerging trends that surround them. These groups and their members do precisely that.
A Global View – Across the globe, I have been able to create a select group that provide unique, third party perspective. They also happen to be true local experts that can assist my existing client base anywhere, anytime (and yes, send business my direction as well).
Whatever profession you are in, there are obviously various methods to help develop your own network. Just make sure you get involved early and engage often. Like anything in life, you will only get out what you put back in. Don’t expect more until you do more.
One final point worth noting. There has been another amazing benefit from spending time expanding my network – the development of lifelong friendships. It is amazing how your quality of life improves dramatically when you surround yourself with intelligent, kind, positive thinking people. It’s really that simple.
I am extremely proud to be a part of these amazing organizations and thankful for the role they continue to play in my day to day business. Similar to my mentors, I would recommend them to anyone who values the importance of high standards and a transformative, continually improving approach to their career.
